Family says he used to drink to ease chronic pain

An autorickshaw driver from Goregaon committed suicide by hanging inside his vehicle on Friday. The Dinsdoshi police have registered an accidental death report in the matter. Though no suicide note was found, the family of the deceased said he was in excruciating pain because of pre-existing conditions that were compounded by the unavailability of alcohol during the lockdown.

According to officials, the body of Dayashankar Soni, 47, was spotted by some passers- by on Friday morning. The autorickshaw was parked outside his residence at BMC colony, Santosh Nagar, in Goregaon East. They informed the police, who rushed him to Siddharth Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

The victim is survived by his wife and four daughters. His family told the police that he often slept in the autorickshaw to avoid cramming up their small house. They said he had gone to the auto as usual but didn’t suspect that he would end up taking the extreme step.

The family also told the police that he was undergoing treatment for chronic pain in his legs and back. “Under normal circumstances, he often consumed alcohol to ease the pain. Since the lockdown came into effect, he had not been able to drink, which worsened his condition,” a police officer said.
