A 40-year-old man from Nepal working as a peon in a private firm in Matunga allegedly hanged himself to death on Tuesday after fearing that he had contracted the deadly Covid-19 diseases.

The police said that the victim’s brother told them that he was suffering from cold, cough and fever.

The victim was employed with a tours and travels company.

According to the police, the incident took place in the Matunga office of the victim where he lived with his younger brother, who worked as a driver. On Sunday around 6 am, the victim’s brother went out for washing the car he drives. He returned around 8 am. When he knocked the door, there was no response. He then peeped through a hole in the door, and found Gagan hanging from the ceiling fan. He immediately informed the police who broke open the door.

The brother told the police that he was suffering from cough cold and fever for the past two three days and suspected that it was the coronavirus. However, he did not visit a doctor, and took medicines on his own.

The police informed the doctors, who after following the necessary precautions and procedures, took the body to hospital.

The police searched the premises for a suicide note but did not find any.

“There was no reason for him to take this extreme step. He was only disturbed and scared due to the flu-like symptoms. He kept on saying that he might have contracted coronavirus,” said a relative of the victim. The victim’s brother said that he had shifted to Mumbai from Surat two years ago. He was having cough and cold and he had mentioned about it to me repeatedly.

An officer from the Matunga police staion said that they have registered an accidental death report. “We are waiting for the detailed post-mortem report, which will take a few days,” he said.

Dr Rajesh Dere, Professor and head of department at Sion Hospitals, said that the postmortem report found hanging as the primary cause of death.
