A farmer residing in the Gajendragad village of Gadag district in Karnataka allegedly committed suicide over fear of getting infected by coronavirus.

Gurusangappa Jangannavar (40) had returned from Mangaluru a few days ago. He had a fever and was admitted to a nearby government hospital. However, he was later discharged as he had recovered and doctors had said that he did not have symptoms of COVID-19.

However, Jagannavar was under constant fear that he may have contracted COVID-19 and hence, he committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree on his farm.

The deceased, Sadashiva Shetty, was a resident of Meramajalu village in Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district. He was an employee of a local petrol bunk.

The man had hanged himself from the ceiling fan of his house. He feared that because of him, his family members too were at the risk of being infected.

Another middle-aged man from Uppoor village in neighbouring Udupi district had ended his life after suspecting that he had the COVID-19 infection.

So far, 101 people have tested positive for the contagious virus in Karnataka. Moreover, Karnataka Health Minister B Sriramulu on Wednesday said that about 300 people from the state had attended the religious congregation of Tablighi Jamaat at Nizamuddin Markaz Masjid in New Delhi last month, and 40 of them have been identified and quarantined.
