Jamshedpur: In a shocking case, a 30-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house at Vishwakarma Nagar in Jamshedpur’s Mango suburb on Sunday. Reportedly, the man was deeply stressed as his wedding was indefinitely postponed, according to the police.
The incident took place within the territorial jurisdiction of the Olidih Police Station. The deceased man was identified as Sanjit Gupta. The police have registered a case of suicide and are investigating the matter. The body of the deceased man was sent to MGM for conducting postmortem examination, a source said.
According to a report by The Times of India, the deceased man went to his room after having dinner on Saturday night. At around 4 am when his father Rajendra Prasad Gupta woke up to use the washroom, he found Sanjit hanging from the ceiling fan in the living room of their house.
The deceased man’s father waited outside the post mortem room of the hospital to collect his son’s body. He broke down inconsolably. He said that his son’s marriage was fixed with a girl from Bihar’s Aurangabad and the couple scheduled to tie the knot on April 25. However, the wedding date was postponed due to the imposition of the nationwide lockdown in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases. The wedding date postponement affected Sanjit in an adverse manner, Rajendra added.
After the postponement of marriage date, Sanjit, who ran a grocery store, got depressed and stopped speaking with his family and friends. His father told TOI that Sanjit blamed the lockdown for spoiling the plans of his marriage and developed suicidal tendencies. He made several attempts to pacify him but he refused to listen to him. Rajendra had lost two other sons before Sanjit’s death. One of his sons had drowned in the year 2000 and another had gone missing in 2012.
