Hyderabad: A police head constable allegedly committed suicide after he developed withdrawal symptoms due to the unavailability of liquor at Amberpet in Hyderabad.
Identified as Balaraju, he was posted at City Armed Reserve Headquarters in Hyderabad.
According to police sources, Balaraju, a 2004 batch constable was residing with his family at Prem Nagar of Amberpet Police Station limits in the city. He was addicted to alcohol. Since the lockdown, he was not able to get alcohol. For the past few days, he was behaving abnormally due to alleged alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
On Monday, he allegedly hanged himself at his home. Amberpet police have registered a case and started an investigation.
At least 20 persons have either committed suicide or died all over the state due to alcohol withdrawal symptoms since the lockdown. Further, the Institute of Mental Health at Erragadda has been witnessing a huge rush of patients with alcohol withdrawal symptoms since the lockdown. The flow was so high that the hospital had to dedicate a ward to treat these patients.
