Two labourers die after consuming solvent as booze substitute in TN

Coimbatore, May 15 (UNI) Two alcoholics died after they allegedly consumed a poisonous chemical in a bid to get intoxicated at Kurumbapalayam village in Pollachi here on Friday.
Police said the deceased have been identified as A.Bhoopathy Uthiraj (34) and D.Suresh (30). The duo were working in a casting company.
As the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC) closed all its retail outlets and bars following the directions from Madras High Court, the duo could not get liquor.
Frustrated over this, the duo allegedly consumed the solvent used in the casting company by mixing it with water on Thursday evening.
Both of them reported acute abdominal pain and swooned, following which they were admitted at Pollachi Government Hospital and later referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) after their condition worsened.
They died without responding to the treatment at CMCH today.
Pollachi Taluk police registered a case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and sent the bodies for post-mortem.
This is the second incident in Coimbatore district where the consumption of chemicals as an alternative for liquor amidst the lockdown has turned fatal and claimed three lives so far.
It may be recalled that on April 11, a 35-year-old man in Sulur consumed hand sanitizer to get inebriated, resulting in is death.
In a similar incident, three addicts died after consuming 'aftershave' lotion as booze substitute at Kottaipattinam in Pudukottai district on April 4.
In another tragic incident, three labourer lost their lives after consuming hand sanitizers as substitute for alcohol at Chengalpattu district during the first week of April.
Three labourers died after consuming methanol as substitute for liquor in Alapakkam village in Cuddalore district in the second week of April.
