Two Covid-19 patients commit suicide at Chennai hospitals within 24 hours

Over 12,000 cases of the novel coronavirus have been detected in Chennai alone while Tamil Nadu has more than 18,000 confirmed cases to date.

A 50-year-old patient from Mathur in Krishnagiri district, who was undergoing treatment for novel coronavirus at the Stanley Medical College and Hospital, hung himself to death on Tuesday. He was admitted to the hospital after he started showing symptoms and his samples returned positive for the infection.

Housed on the third floor of the hospital, the patient went to the restroom but did not return. His absence alarmed staffers who set out to look for him and found him hanging in the toilet.

Another patient, a 57-year-old man undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at the Omandurar multi-specialty Government General Hospital, hung himself to death. His body was found in the early hours of Wednesday. A resident of Royapuram, where authorities have detected over 2,000 confirmed cases, he was admitted to the Omandurar multi-specialty Government General Hospital about a week ago. He was a clerk at the Madras High Court.

Local police have registered cases in connection with both incidents.

Latest data by the Greater Chennai Corporation shows that 12,203 patients have been diagnosed with the infection in the state capital. Out of these, 6,252 have been notified as active cases while 5,765 have recovered. The infection has claimed 93 lives in Chennai alone.

Tally of confirmed cases in six out of Chennai's 15 containment zones has crossed 1,000. These include Anna Nagar (1046), Tondiarpet (1262), Teynampet (1317) ,Thiruvika Nagar (1325), Kodambakkam (1559), and Royapuram (2252).

Tamil Nadu Health Department has also revealed that the ratio of male patients to that of female patients is 60:40 while 519 cases are of children below 9 years of age.
